Medior to Senior Consultant final disposal of radioactive waste

We are seeking a highly experienced Final Disposal Specialist to lead and support critical projects related to the permanent and secure containment of radioactive waste. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge and practical experience in the design, implementation, and operation of final disposal solutions, including deep geological repositories and other long-term storage methods.
This is a unique opportunity to play a key role in the development of cutting-edge disposal technologies and ensure compliance with the highest safety and regulatory standards in one of the most challenging and essential areas of nuclear waste management.
Key responsibilities:
- Develop models for long-term radionuclide transport, containment performance, and environmental impact;
- Design waste isolation barriers and engineered containment systems to ensure long-term safety and integrity;
- Coordinate multi-disciplinary project teams, including geologists, engineers, and safety specialists;
- Lead the planning and implementation of final disposal solutions for radioactive waste, with a focus on geological repositories and other advanced containment technologies;
- Ensure that final disposal projects comply with national and international regulatory requirements (IAEA, NRC, EURATOM, etc.);
- Identify and mitigate risks associated with final disposal operations and long-term containment;
- Stay up-to-date on emerging technologies and research in the field of radioactive waste disposal;
- Collaborate with industry bodies and research institutions to advance best practices and innovative solutions.
Profile
Education:
- Master’s or Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering, Geosciences, Environmental Engineering, or a related technical field;
- Knowledge of remote monitoring technologies for final disposal sites;
- Publications or contributions to research in radioactive waste disposal.
Experience:
- Minimum 6 years of specialised experience in final disposal of radioactive waste;
- Proven track record of successful delivery of large-scale disposal projects.
Technical Skills:
- Knowledge of geotechnical and hydrogeological assessments for site selection and containment;
- In-depth knowledge on the safety case methodology for final disposal;
- Expertise in radionuclide transport modelling, long-term safety analysis, and containment system design;
- Familiarity with international regulatory frameworks and licensing processes for radioactive waste disposal.
Soft Skills:
- Strong project management and leadership skills;
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical issues to both technical and non-technical audiences;
- Collaborative mindset and experience working in cross-disciplinary environments.

Modern employment conditions package in line with the market
- Depending on work experience graded in scale 16 or 17. Range € 4,280 – € 6,100 and € 4,950 – € 7,000);
- 27 vacation days and 12 days of flex time (you can also sell your flex time at 5.26% more gross pay);
- 8.3% year-end bonus and 8% vacation allowance;
- Pension with the ABP; NRG pays 70% of the premium;
- Commuting expenses are reimbursed at € 0.23 per k/m
up to a maximum of 50 km one way;
- A travel allowance and mobility budget of € 5,000 net (paid once, if you live 1.5 hours travel distance from our work location);
- A moving allowance if you do not live in the Netherlands. This concerns an amount up to a maximum of € 2,750 which you can declare to our finance department.
