Medior to Senior Consultant radioactive waste management

NRG’s Decommissioning and Waste Disposal team covers research and consultancy regarding the full range of waste management, from waste characterisation, waste conditioning, waste packaging, and storage to its eventual disposal. In this position, you will work within the DWD (Decommissioning, Waste and Disposal) team and contribute to local and international projects on radioactive waste management. Your main tasks will be developing waste routes from engineering to safety demonstrations and contributing to international projects related to radioactive waste management. The successful candidate will play a critical role in the safe and efficient handling, storage, and final disposal of radioactive materials, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and best practices in the nuclear industry.
Key responsibilities:
You will work on various consultancy projects for customers, including radioactive waste producers, radioactive waste management organisations and regulators, both in the Netherlands and overseas. Work includes a wide variety of activities across the areas of integrated radioactive waste management, spent fuels and nuclear materials:
- Analysing problems and developing solutions;
- The development of radioactive waste management strategies including consideration of the most appropriate method for treatment and/or disposal; and high-level strategic studies to support and underpin decision-making at different stages of the radioactive waste lifecycle;
- Reviewing and assimilating numerical data/information, including characterisation data and radionuclide inventories;
- Knowledge about cutting- and decontamination techniques;
- Knowledge about solid, liquid and gaseous radioactive waste types and treatment;
- Knowledge about treatment and conditioning of solid radioactive waste;
- Consideration of approaches for radioactive waste conditioning and packaging;
- Knowledge about disposal concepts for different types of radioactive waste is an asset;
- Knowledge about waste packages for storage, transport, and/or disposal;
- Production of high-quality technical reports on the outcome of your work;
- Interact with and present results to customers and engage in stakeholder engagement activities (including facilitation);
- Business development activities;
- Delivering work to agreed timescales and cost.
Ideally, applicants will have:
- A degree qualification in a scientific or engineering subject or significant technical expertise in a relevant field;
- At least 5 years of experience in the nuclear industry related to radioactive waste management;
- Experience in a consultancy or client-facing role;
- Ability to lead a multi-disciplinary team, manage client relationships, and lead technical delivery of complex and challenging work packages;
- Language: English, knowledge of Dutch and German is an asset;
Desirable skills, qualities and experience:
- Understanding of radioactive waste management on a nuclear licensed site and on-site experience at a nuclear facility;
- Project and programme management, including staff development and mentorship;
- Experience in radioactive dose modelling and waste characterisation;
- Management of international projects on radioactive waste management.

Modern employment conditions package in line with the market
- Depending on work experience graded in scale 16 or 17. Range € 4,280 – € 6,100 and € 4,950 – € 7,000);
- 27 vacation days and 12 days of flex time (you can also sell your flex time at 5.26% more gross pay);
- 8.3% year-end bonus and 8% vacation allowance;
- Pension with the ABP; NRG pays 70% of the premium;
- Commuting expenses are reimbursed at € 0.23 per k/m
up to a maximum of 50 km one way;
- A travel allowance and mobility budget of € 5,000 net (paid once, if you live 1.5 hours travel distance from our work location);
- A moving allowance if you do not live in the Netherlands. This concerns an amount up to a maximum of € 2,750 which you can declare to our finance department.
